The following questions exemplify topics addressed by contributors:
Topic 1: nature and theoretical foundations of GBL and play for mathematical learning
What different perspectives exist on the concepts of game and play; how are they connected? How do different theories on game and play add a better understanding of learning through games and play?
What are the basic definitions and what are the theoretical foundations for learning through play, games, and gamification?
Play is characterized by modelling, hypothetical thinking, abstraction, guessing, estimating and assuming or adopting. These can be in young children’s play, but do they by their presence make this play mathematical?
Topic 2: teaching with GBL and play and professional development
What kind of teachers’ knowledge, skills and competencies do teachers need to develop to effectively carry out GBL and playful learning? And how can professional development and teacher education support teachers?
What are best practices of playful activities, games, and gamified learning environments and how do they enact the learning of specific mathematical content and 21st-century skills?
How can teachers and preschool teachers support the development of socio-mathematical norms in free-play or game-based situations?
Topic 3: GBL and play as innovative learning environments
In what innovative ways do GBL and/or playful learning transform/change/challenge traditional classroom practices, learning environment, classroom interaction, etc?
What examples of games and/or playful activities exist for mathematics that foster new perspectives on assessment? How have they been applied in classroom or kindergarten practice?
Topic 4: Designing games and learning by making games
How can we involve teachers and students in educational game design within mathematics? What models for educational game design are suitable to be used by teachers, researchers, and students?
Contributions are written in English, using the provided Template.
